1. Meaning of Microorganisms
Microorganisms are very tiny living things that are usually too small to be seen with our eyes. We need a microscope to see many microorganisms clearly. Microorganisms are also sometimes called microbes. They can be found almost everywhere—in air, water, soil, food, plants, animals, and the human body.
2. Types of Microorganisms
There are different types of microorganisms. Some common ones are:
A. Bacteria
Bacteria are very tiny organisms. Some bacteria are useful, while others can cause diseases. Examples of diseases that can be caused by harmful bacteria include cholera and typhoid.
B. Fungi
Fungi include organisms such as yeast and mould. Yeast is useful in making bread, while some moulds grow on old or spoiled food.
C. Protozoa
Protozoa are tiny organisms that are often found in water or moist places. Some protozoa can cause diseases. For example, the parasite that causes malaria is a protozoan called Plasmodium.
D. Some Algae
Some algae are tiny organisms that live mainly in water. Some are useful because they produce food and oxygen.
3. Where Can Microorganisms Be Found?
Microorganisms can be found in many places, such as:
- Soil
- Water
- Air
- Food
- Plants
- Animals
- Human bodies
- Dirty surfaces
- Rubbish and waste
Not all microorganisms are harmful.
4. Useful Microorganisms
Some microorganisms are helpful to humans. They can:
- Help in making bread.
- Help in making yoghurt and some other foods.
- Help break down dead plants and animals.
- Help make the soil fertile.
- Be used in producing some medicines.
- Help in the production of certain foods and drinks.
Example: Yeast helps dough rise when making bread.
5. Harmful Microorganisms
Some microorganisms can be harmful. They can:
- Cause diseases in humans.
- Spoil food.
- Cause diseases in animals.
- Cause diseases in plants.
- Make water unsafe to drink.
- Cause food poisoning.
Examples of diseases associated with microorganisms include cholera, typhoid, malaria, tuberculosis, and some forms of diarrhoea.
6. How to Protect Ourselves from Harmful Microorganisms
We can protect ourselves by:
- Washing our hands regularly with soap and clean water.
- Drinking clean and safe water.
- Cooking food properly.
- Washing fruits and vegetables before eating them.
- Keeping our homes and surroundings clean.
- Covering food properly.
- Keeping toilets clean.
- Avoiding spoiled food.
- Keeping rubbish in covered bins and disposing of it properly.
- Following good personal hygiene.
7. Important Point to Remember
Not all microorganisms are harmful. Some microorganisms are useful to people, animals, plants, and the environment, while others can cause diseases or spoil food.
