1. What is an Adjective?

An adjective is a word that describes a person, animal, place, or thing.

Examples:

  • a tall boy
  • a beautiful girl
  • a big house
  • a fast car
  • a clean classroom

Words such as tall, beautiful, big, fast, and clean are adjectives.

2. What is a Comparative Adjective?

A comparative adjective is used when we compare two people, animals, places, or things.

We often add -er to short adjectives.

Examples:

Adjective Comparative
tall taller
short shorter
fast faster
slow slower
small smaller
big bigger
old older
young younger

Examples in Sentences

  • John is taller than Peter.
  • A car is faster than a bicycle.
  • My bag is heavier than yours.
  • This house is bigger than that house.

Important Word

When comparing two things, we often use the word than.

Example:
Mary is shorter than Jane.

3. What is a Superlative Adjective?

A superlative adjective is used when we compare three or more people, animals, places, or things and show that one has the highest or lowest quality.

We often add -est to short adjectives.

Examples:

fast faster fastest
slow slower slowest
small smaller smallest
big bigger biggest
old older oldest
young younger youngest

Examples in Sentences

  • John is taller than Peter.
  • James is the tallest boy in the class.

  • A plane is the fastest of the three.
  • This box is bigger than that one.
  • This is the biggest box in the room.

Important Word

We usually use the before a superlative adjective.

Example:
She is the tallest girl in the class.

4. Longer Adjectives

For many longer adjectives, we use more for the comparative and most for the superlative.

Examples:

beautiful more beautiful most beautiful
difficult more difficult most difficult
expensive more expensive most expensive
interesting more interesting most interesting

Examples:

  • This flower is more beautiful than that one.
  • This is the most beautiful flower in the garden.
  • Mathematics is more difficult than some subjects.
  • This is the most difficult question.

5. Special Adjectives

Some adjectives do not follow the usual rules.

many/much more most

Examples:

  • This book is better than that book.
  • This is the best book in the library.
  • Today’s weather is worse than yesterday’s.
  • That was the worst day of the week.

Comparative = Compare TWO

tall → taller

Example:
John is taller than James.

Superlative = Compare THREE OR MORE

tall → tallest

Example:
John is the tallest boy in the class.
