Learning Objectives

At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Explain the meaning of first aid.
  2. Identify situations where first aid may be needed.
  3. Mention items found in a first-aid box.
  4. Explain simple first-aid treatments.
  5. State the importance of first aid.
  6. Identify when to seek help from an adult or health professional.

1. Meaning of First Aid

First aid is the immediate and temporary care given to a person who is injured or suddenly becomes ill before professional medical help is available. For example, if a pupil gets a small cut while playing, simple first aid can be given while an adult decides whether further medical care is needed. Important: Children should tell a teacher, parent, or another trusted adult about injuries and should not give medicines or perform dangerous procedures on their own.

2. Why Is First Aid Important?

First aid is important because it can:

  1. Help reduce pain and discomfort.
  2. Prevent an injury from becoming worse.
  3. Help control bleeding.
  4. Protect wounds from dirt and germs.
  5. Give the injured person comfort.
  6. Help keep a person safe while waiting for medical help.

3. The First-Aid Box

A first-aid box contains items used to provide basic care for minor injuries. Some items include:

  • Plasters
  • Sterile gauze
  • Bandages
  • Cotton wool
  • Antiseptic wipes
  • Disposable gloves
  • Scissors
  • Adhesive tape
  • Clean dressings

Medicines should only be used when an appropriate adult or health professional says they are suitable.

4. First Aid for a Small Cut

If someone has a small cut:

  1. Tell an adult.
  2. Wash your hands if possible.
  3. If gloves are available, the person helping should wear them.
  4. Gently rinse the wound with clean running water.
  5. Use a clean dressing or plaster to cover it.
  6. Keep the wound clean and dry.
  7. Tell an adult if the wound is deep, dirty, painful, or does not stop bleeding.

If the cut is bleeding heavily:

An adult should apply firm pressure with a clean cloth or dressing and seek medical help immediately.

5. First Aid for a Minor Burn

For a small burn:

  1. Tell an adult immediately.
  2. Cool the burn under cool running water for about 20 minutes.
  3. Remove nearby jewellery or clothing if it is not stuck to the skin.
  4. Cover the burn loosely with a clean, non-fluffy dressing or clean plastic film.
  5. Get medical help for serious burns.

Never:

  • Put ice directly on a burn.
  • Apply toothpaste, butter, oil, or other household substances.
  • Burst blisters.
  • Pull away clothing that is stuck to the skin.

6. First Aid for a Nosebleed

If someone has a nosebleed:

  1. Sit the person upright.
  2. Ask them to lean slightly forward.
  3. Tell them to breathe through their mouth.
  4. An adult should pinch the soft part of the nose firmly for about 10–15 minutes.
  5. Get medical help if the bleeding is heavy, follows a serious injury, or does not stop.

Do not tilt the head backwards, because blood may flow into the throat.

7. First Aid for a Sprain

A sprain happens when a ligament around a joint is stretched or injured. For a minor sprain:

  • Stop the activity.
  • Rest the injured part.
  • Tell an adult.
  • A cold pack wrapped in cloth may be placed on the area for a short period.
  • Seek medical help if there is severe pain, major swelling, deformity, or difficulty using the body part.

8. First Aid for Fainting

If someone faints:

  1. Tell an adult immediately.
  2. Make sure the area is safe.
  3. Lay the person down.
  4. Do not give them food or drink while they are unconscious.
  5. Check that they are breathing normally.
  6. If they do not wake up quickly or are not breathing normally, an adult should call emergency medical services and begin appropriate emergency care.

9. Important Safety Rules

When giving first aid:

  • Stay calm.
  • Get an adult immediately.
  • Do not give medicines without permission from a responsible adult or health professional.
  • Do not touch blood with bare hands.
  • Do not move someone with a serious injury unless there is immediate danger.
  • Do not attempt a treatment you have not been trained to perform.
  • Always seek medical help when an injury is serious.

🚨 When Should We Get Medical Help?

Get an adult and seek urgent medical help when someone:

  • Has severe bleeding.
  • Has difficulty breathing.
  • Is unconscious or does not wake up.
  • Has a serious burn.
  • Has a deep or very large wound.
  • Has a suspected broken bone.
  • Has a serious head, neck, or back injury.
  • Has been seriously injured in an accident.
  • Is very sick or suddenly becomes seriously unwell.
