Meaning of Pollution

Pollution is the introduction of harmful substances into our environment, making it dirty and unsafe for people, animals, and plants.

The harmful substances that cause pollution are called pollutants.

Types of Pollution

There are four common types of pollution:

1. Air Pollution
   This occurs when harmful smoke, gases, and dust make the air dirty.
   Examples: smoke from vehicles, factories, and burning rubbish.
2. Water Pollution
   This occurs when harmful substances make rivers, lakes, streams, and other water sources dirty.
   Examples: throwing rubbish, oil, and chemicals into water.
3. Land Pollution
   This occurs when the land is made dirty by waste and harmful materials.
   Examples: throwing plastics, cans, bottles, and other rubbish on the ground.
4. Noise Pollution
   This is unwanted or excessive sound that can disturb people and animals.
   Examples: loud music, vehicle horns, generators, and machines.

Causes of Pollution

Pollution can be caused by:

• Burning rubbish.
• Smoke from cars and factories.
• Throwing waste into rivers and streams.
• Dumping refuse on the ground.
• Pouring chemicals and oil into water.
• Excessive noise from machines and vehicles.
• Poor disposal of sewage.

Effects of Pollution

Pollution can:

• Cause diseases.
• Make the environment dirty.
• Kill fish and other aquatic animals.
• Harm plants and animals.
• Make the air difficult to breathe.
• Contaminate drinking water.
• Cause unpleasant smells.
• Disturb people’s sleep and concentration.

How to Prevent Pollution

We can prevent pollution by:

1. Putting rubbish in waste bins.
2. Avoiding the burning of rubbish.
3. Planting trees.
4. Keeping our surroundings clean.
5. Recycling and reusing some materials.
6. Not throwing waste into rivers or streams.
7. Properly disposing of sewage and chemicals.
8. Avoiding unnecessary loud noises.
