1. Meaning of Culture

Culture is the way of life of a particular group of people. It includes the way people dress, eat, speak, celebrate, marry, worship, work, and relate with one another. For example, different Nigerian groups have different languages, foods, dressing styles, festivals, and traditional practices.


2. Examples of Culture

Examples of things that make up our culture include:

  • Language
  • Food
  • Dressing
  • Music
  • Dance
  • Religion
  • Festivals
  • Marriage customs
  • Traditional occupations
  • Greetings
  • Traditional buildings
  • Names
  • Arts and crafts
  • Stories and folktales

3. Aspects of Culture

A. Language

Language is an important part of culture. People use language to communicate with one another. Examples of Nigerian languages include Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Efik, Tiv, Kanuri, and many others.

B. Food

Different groups of people have different traditional foods. Examples include:

  • Pounded yam
  • Jollof rice
  • Tuwo
  • Moi moi
  • Akara
  • Amala
  • Egusi soup

C. Dressing

People have different traditional ways of dressing. Examples include Agbada, Iro and Buba, Kaftan, Ankara clothing, and other traditional clothes.

D. Music and Dance

Traditional music and dance are used during celebrations, festivals, marriages, and other important occasions.

E. Festivals

Festivals are special occasions celebrated by different communities. They may be celebrated to remember important events, honour traditions, or bring people together.


4. Importance of Culture

Culture is important because it:

  1. Gives people a sense of identity.
  2. Helps people understand their history.
  3. Brings people together.
  4. Teaches good values and traditions.
  5. Helps preserve the history of a community.
  6. Promotes unity among people.
  7. Provides entertainment through music, dance, and festivals.
  8. Can attract tourists and create employment.

5. How to Preserve Our Culture

We can preserve our culture by:

  • Learning our local languages.
  • Teaching children about good traditional values.
  • Wearing traditional clothes on appropriate occasions.
  • Learning traditional music and dances.
  • Preserving important cultural objects.
  • Recording and teaching traditional stories.
  • Participating in cultural festivals.
  • Respecting elders and traditional knowledge.
  • Passing good cultural practices from one generation to another.

6. Good and Bad Cultural Practices

Not every cultural practice is good. We should keep and promote cultural practices that encourage love, peace, respect, unity, and good behaviour. We should avoid cultural practices that harm people, discriminate against others, or put people’s lives and health at risk.


7. Respect for Other Cultures

People do not all have the same culture. We should respect people whose language, food, dressing, religion, or customs are different from ours. We should not insult or make fun of another person’s culture. Different cultures can live together peacefully.
